This project is part of a proposal for conservation and preservation of heritage sites with a special reference to the Eastern and Northern Provinces 2009-2012 issued by the Ministry of Cultural Affairs and National Heritage in Sri Lanka under the auspices of the Sri Lanka – Netherlands Cultural Cooperation Programme.

Trincomalee Fort has a long standing history. Chronicle evidence of its history date back tot the fifth century BC. At present, the fort is being used as an administrative centre of the Trincomalee District. Some of the buildings are occupied by the armed forces and some are being used as quarters for the government officers. The most prominent functioning places for the general public in this fort are Korneshwaran Covil and Gokanna Buddhist Temple. The Fort is as the National Archaeological reserve list.


Project information

Objectives
The goals of the project are the preservation of National Archaeological reserve, the upgrading of the surrounding environment, re-establishing of the ancient landscape, creating a tourist attraction for the area, strengthening ethnic relationships and enhancing the income and lifestyle of the local community.


Result(s)
The project expects to realize the conservation of the rampart walls, cleaning and preservation of ancient dungeons, preservation of ancient buildings and establishment of the ancient landscape, the establishment of a museum on the history of war in Sri Lanka, the establishment of an information centre, archaeological museum rest house etc., and providing visitors infrastructure.
