The National Museum of India in New Delhi housed an exhibition called Photographic Splendour, Early Indian Heritage Views from the Vogel Collection, the Netherlands. The Leiden Professor of Sanskrit and Indian Archaeology, Jean Philippe Vogel (1871 – 1958) was the key feature of the exhibition. During his career in the Netherlands at the University of Leiden and in India with the Archaeological Survey of India he assembled about 10.000 photographs. The exhibition was composed by Gerda Theuns - de Boer of the Photography Department of the Kern Institute of the University of Leiden and exhibited some 80 original photographs from the Kern Institute’s Vogel collection. It has become evident that apart from London, Leiden, too, is a valuable repository for the photographic heritage of India. Theuns – de Boer highlighted Vogel’s work in a monograph entitled A Vision of Splendour. Indian Heritage in the Photographs of Jean Philippe Vogel, 1901- 1913, which was published in India.
The Vogel project has been funded with the aid of the Royal Netherlands Embassy in New Delhi and the Jan Gonda Fund Foundation, a subsidy provided by the Ministry for Development Cooperation. The Royal Netherlands Embassy in Delhi took the lead.
