The Maritime Museum of Galle is the only museum in Sri Lanka, which makes the public aware of the marine sciences such as biology and archaeology. After converting this warehouse into an attractive museum, it was opened on 09th of May 1992. The museum is administered under the Department of National Museums. It contains a collection of corals and marine life, but also it made public awareness on lifestyle of the fishermen. Models of traditional watercrafts and an ancient VOC ship are displayed. The Department of Education has identified the museum as a centre of education for children. The Maritime Museum was seriously damaged during the Tsunami in 2004. The main activities expected are the reparation of the museum building, interior designing, the conservation of objects, collection of material, reconstruction of models, preparation of a Ticket Counter and purchasing audiovisual equipment.
