Willy H. Metz studied prehistoric archaeology at the Universities of Amsterdam and Cambridge (England). She obtained her doctorate with a thesis on the middle and late Bronze Age in West Frisia focusing on archaeological aerial photography and other remote sensing techniques.

Metz was as a senior researcher and assistant professor at the former Institute for Pre- and Proto-historical Archaeology, now the Amsterdam Archaeological Centre of the University of Amsterdam. She did also archaeological research in the Netherlands, in several other European countries and in Venezuela. In the latter country she studied, along with two colleagues, the vestiges of the salt trade of the Dutch provinces Holland and Zealand in the early 17th century in the Caribbean. About this study various papers have published. Nowadays Metz is affiliated as a visiting researcher at the above institute.

From 1998 - 2006 and 2008 – 2011, she was an alderwoman and deputy mayor of, resp., the municipalities of Huizen and Naarden. Currently, she is chairperson of the Liberal Party (VVD) branch in Huizen, secretary of the Dutch Museum of Anthropology and Prehistory Foundation, president of the Foundation Fly-stock "Schiphol", chairperson of the Foundation Animales, and a member of the board of the Animal Protection Society for Central Netherlands..
